Duomo, Cappella di San Brizio

The other decorative elements

Signorelli also frescoed the small chapel to the right of the entrance of the Cappella Nova. The Pietà, painted in 1503 after the death of his son Antonio, reflects his tragic loss. At the sides Saints Pietro Parenzo and Faustino bear witness to the dedication of the altar to two saints particularly dear to the Orvietani.

On the left side is the small chapel originally dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene where the panel commissioned by the City of Orvieto from Signorelli in 1504, and now in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo, once stood. The chapel subsequently became that of the Gualterio family.

In 1579, Ippolito Scalza's marble Pietà (later moved elsewhere) was placed opposite Signorelli's Pietà

The Cappella Nova also bears the signs of eighteenth-century changes. In the first place, the monumental late Baroque altar created between 1712 and 1715 by Bernardino Cametti was inspired by Bernini's Gloria in Saint Peter's. The Gualterio family chapel to the left of the entrance was then rearranged and decorated with polychrome marbles and a fine painting by Dominico Maria Muratori (1661/2-1749) depicting a Sacra Conversazione with Saints John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene, Agnes and Charles Borromeo (Madonna and Child surrounded by saints).
