- A bonus for Luca
A bonus for Luca
In view of the artist's commitment and trustworthiness, in January 1500 the Opera del Duomo bestowed a bonus of wheat and wine on Luca Signorelli. Subsequently, also in the second contract, the Fabbrica promised to furnish him with wheat and a certain quantity of must corresponding every year to the period of the grape harvest.
The contract also had clauses regarding the colors to be used and who should pay for what. Some colors such as gold leaf and lapis lazuli blue were particularly precious and were a real investment the artist could hardly be called upon to anticipate. So, in Signorelli's case, the contract expressly stated that the maestro "is obliged to put all the colors at his own expense... except for the gold and blue which the Fabrica is obliged to provide".
